The shipping company Baleària Caribbean has announced that it will debut the renovated, and now faster, ferry Jaume II sometime in mid-January. The ship will replace the company’s current ferry, the Jaume I, sailing between Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Freeport, Grand Bahama, in two and a half hours.
The company re-engined the Jaume II in 2017 to give it greater energy efficiency, better service reliability and a higher speed. Compared to the Jaume I’s speed, which maxes out at 32 knots, the updated Jaume II will reach 35 knots. The Jaume II will offer a similar capacity to the Jaume I of around 600 passengers. Additionally, Baleària Caribbean reformed the ship’s interior to improve passenger comfort aboard the Jaume II.
Baleària Caribbean provides four connections every week between Fort Lauderdale and Grand Bahama. With its ferries sailing Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the company offers departures from Fort Lauderdale at 8 a.m. and from Freeport at 6:30 p.m.
Eighty-one meters long and with a hull of 26 meters, the Jaume II offers both regular and superior seats and contains a café, a shop and a dog hotel. The ship has been outfitted to accommodate passengers with reduced mobility, with 9-12 adapted lounge seats, adapted restrooms, 1-2 safety anchorage points for wheelchairs and access ramps from the car deck.
