Delta Issues Travel Waiver Following Record Atlanta Storms

Delta has issued a travel waiver after a mid-week storm caused a ground stop at the airline’s Atlanta hub.

Customers who were booked to travel through Atlanta April 5 – 7 are entitled to a refund on the unused portion of their ticket if their flight was cancelled or delayed by 90 minutes or more. Travelers may also make a one-time change to their ticket without fee, even if their flight is not cancelled. The ticket must be reissued on or before April 11 with rebooked travel to begin no later than April 11.

According to a statement from Chief Operating Officer Gil West on the Delta website, the airline is continuing to work around the clock to bring operations back to normal following a series of severe thunderstorms that hit the airport Wednesday.

“Wednesday’s severe weather was unprecedented for Atlanta and the specific track and intensity of weather like this is often difficult to forecast,” West said. “The convective activity and storm cells, mixed with tornadic conditions, continued to hit in and around the Atlanta Airport from the early morning hours and lasted through the evening, essentially halting much of the day’s operation, prompting delays and cancellations.”

West also warned that customer call volumes remain high due to the busy Spring Break travel period.

Travelers were also stranded at other airports throughout the southeast, including Baton Rouge, LA, Knoxville, TN, and Greensboro, NC. The airline delivered pizza and drinks planeside to stranded customers.

Atlanta is Delta’s largest and business hub, accommodating over 150,000 people per day and cycling 60 percent of the airline’s 1,250 aircraft fleet.
