Millennials in the UK could soon be eligible for an extended rail travel discount.
The Telegraph reports that travelers ages 26-30 could soon purchase a Railcard that provides a third off regular rail fare. It is being introduced first by Greater Anglia Railways in early December, with 10,000 Railcards available. The documents also show that the program could go national in early 2018.
The information comes from documents from Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which owns the National Rail brand. Greater Anglia runs service through Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, according to the BBC.
Neither company has made an official comment on the new Railcard.
Currently, a discount for travelers ages 16-25 is available for £30 a year, according to the Railcard website. The discount applies to Standard Anytime and Off Peak fares, as well as Standard Advance and First Class Advance fares. There is no limit to the number of times travelers can use the card.
There’s also a discounted Railcard available for those over 60.
Eligible travelers can get one third off fares in London Zones 1-6 off-peak with a minimum fare of £8 and Anytime Day Travelcard when bought as part of the journey to London from outside London Zones 1-9 with a minimum fare of £17.50.
Travelers outside the UK who frequently use the rail system can also purchase a Railcard. However, they can only buy it online with a UK address. Travelers can also purchase a card at a staffed rail station ticket, a National Rail-licensed Travel Agent, or at Gatwick Airport, Stansted Airport rail stations, Luton Airport Parkway and Manchester Airport.
