Lufthansa Group has announced its upcoming summer 2024 schedule, offering increased connectivity in the United States and Canada.
Lufthansa will introduce two new gateways in the United States: Raleigh-Durham, NC, and Minneapolis, MN. Furthermore, the airline will commence direct flights from Seattle, WA, to Munich, complementing the existing service from the Pacific Northwest to Frankfurt. Popular gateways across the U.S. and Canada will be bolstered with additional frequencies from Austin, Dallas, Orlando and Calgary to Frankfurt Airport, as well as the shift from three weekly flights to daily service from San Diego to Munich.
With the nation’s capital increasing in popularity for both inbound and outbound travel, and as a key hub for United Airlines, the Lufthansa Group’s global partner SWISS will begin daily service from Washington DC’s Dulles Airport to Zurich. Starting March 28, these flights will the existing service the Lufthansa Group has to Brussels, Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna.
In a further expansion of the group’s operations at Dulles, Lufthansa’s A380 will fly to the nation’s capital for the very first time with service to Munich during the peak months of summer, joining New York’s JFK, Boston Logan Airport and later this fall, Los Angeles’ LAX.
The airline will also add two new destinations, bringing its total number of U.S. gateways to 27. Commencing in early June, an Airbus A330 will service Raleigh–Durham on a year-round basis, with five weekly flights to and from Frankfurt. With this addition in North Carolina, Lufthansa will have two gateways in the state, with Charlotte being served for nearly two decades, linking the city to Munich, Lufthansa’s Bavarian hub.
Minneapolis will connect with Frankfurt using a Boeing 787, also five times per week and year-round, beginning the first week of June. The route will link Minnesota’s largest commercial center with the group’s range of flight offerings in Germany and beyond.
Lufthansa will increase the number of flights operated from Austin and Dallas to Frankfurt. Travelers from San Diego to Munich will also benefit from the summer expansion as the Southern Californian gateway will offer daily flights, more than doubling the current offering with the A350-900.
In summer 2024, Lufthansa will launch an additional route from the Seattle market with direct daily flights to Munich aboard an A350-900. The flight to Munich will complement the existing daily flights from Seattle to Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub as the airline doubles its frequencies out of Washington State.
A major capacity increase will be seen in Washington DC with the A380 being newly introduced into the Lufthansa rotation in this gateway. Lufthansa’s A380 aircraft seats 509 passengers in a four-class configuration: eight seats in first class, 78 seats in business class, 52 seats in premium economy and 371 seats in economy class.
Lufthansa currently serves two gateways in the U.S. with its “Big Bird" (A380): New York’s JFK and Boston, MA. On October 26, Lufthansa’s A380 will begin service to Los Angeles, CA.
SWISS, which operates from several key North American cities, will also launch seasonal service from Toronto to Zurich, complementing its daily service from Montreal with five weekly flights using an A330-300. Service commences May 10, 2024.
Discover, Lufthansa’s leisure carrier, is also expanding its Canadian presence and will shortly operate out of Calgary, exclusively partnering with Air Canada, one of the Lufthansa Group’s key partners in North America.
Through this connectivity at the group’s hubs in Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich, the group will offer more travel opportunities globally, including connections via Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover and SWISS, as well as codeshare flights with United Airlines and Air Canada as a result of the Atlantic Joint Venture.
Additional flights from Lufthansa Group hubs in Europe in 2024 will offer even more connections from the U.S. and Canada to destinations in Italy, France, Greece, India and South Africa.
