Ryanair pilots represented by the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) went on strike today, August 22, with plans calling for the strike to last through August 23. Despite the walkout, Ryanair says that flights to and from UK airports are operating normally, with 92 percent punctuality due to some air traffic control delays.
“We do not expect any disruptions to our flights to/from our UK airports for the rest of the day,” the airline said on its official Twitter account.
On Wednesday Ryanair lost a court bid to block the strike by BALPA pilots. A request for an injunction against a strike by the Irish FORSA pilots union, which had also been planned for August 22 and 23, had been granted earlier that day.
BALPA has called on Ryanair to make a “serious offer” regarding the dispute over compensation, including the airline’s pay structure, pension policies, loss of license insurance and maternity benefits.
The strike is scheduled to last through Friday, August 23. A second round of strike dates is planned for September 2 – 4.
