A glitch in British Airways’ IT systems has caused hundreds of flight cancellations to and from London on the airline.
“We are very sorry to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans,” the airline said in a written statement. “We are working as quickly as possible to resolve a systems issue which has resulted in a number of cancellations and delays today.”
While a number of flights are continuing to operate, British Airways said, customers should check the latest flight information before coming to the airport. Additionally, the airline said that it is offering customers booked on short-haul services departing from Heathrow, Gatwick and London City August 7 a refund or the opportunity to rebook for another day.
Customers on cancelled flights should not travel to the airport, British Airways said. As per its normal policy, the airline said that it will rebook customers on cancelled flights onto another flight at no extra charge, subject to availability and, in many cases, automatically. Customers can also change their rebooked flight if it is not suitable, or cancel their booking and receive a refund if they no longer wish to travel.
Customers on flights delayed for five hours or more will receive a refund for the parts of their trip that they did not fly, British Airways said. If they are delayed at their final destination by more than three hours and that delay arose from causes within the airline’s control, they can claim compensation here.
