Mexican airline Volaris announced it will begin direct flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Acapulco International Airport (ACA) starting on December 19. The new route will run on a weekly basis.
Ernesto Rodríguez Escalona, secretary of tourism of the State of Guerrero, said in a written release the new route is part of a "master plan" to attract international visitors to boost the economy and strengthen the destination’s tourism.
Volaris Flight Y4 600 will depart from LAX at 12:04 p.m. and arrive at ACA at 6:10 p.m.; Volaris Flight Y4 601 will depart ACA at 6:59 p.m. and arrive at LAX at 9:20 p.m.
The new Volaris route arrives just as tourism is on an upswing, with more American tourists than ever visiting Acapulco. The agreement on the new service came about through the combined efforts of the Guerrero state government, the Mexican Tourism Promotion Council (CPTM), the Mexican Aviation Organization and Mundo Imperial.
As part of its plans to update tourism infrastructure, Acapulco will debut a new state-of-the-art airport terminal in 2018 that will ease passenger flow and increase arrivals capacity. The city has also received a billion-dollar investment from Grupo Autofin, a private conglomerate that recently launched XTASEA, the world’s largest over-the-ocean zip line; Grupo Autofin is also renovating several of the city's top hotels, as well as developing a new medical center, a tennis stadium and an eco-amusement park. The completion dates for these projects are all between 2017 and 2022.
Acapulco attractions include five major golf courses, tennis, kayaking, scuba diving, windsurfing, sport fishing and bungee jumping or parachuting.
