Allianz Partners has completed its annual review of the “Top 10 Spring Break Destinations” and found that spring break bookings for 2022 have increased by 134 percent over 2021 bookings. Americans are planning trips to warm weather destinations in the U.S., Mexico and other international attractions for the travel season. Domestically, U.S. cities in the south and west are favored this spring as travelers plan trips to five Florida cities besides Phoenix, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Mexico occupies the top three international destinations with travelers planning island and beach getaways.
Allianz Partners analyzed flight itineraries of 4.1 million travelers’ trips spanning five to eight days for travel planned between February 18 and April 18, 2022. The survey revealed that, for the sixth consecutive year, Orlando remains the most popular domestic destination among Americans, perhaps fueled in part by Disney World Resort’s 50th anniversary season. Four other favorite Florida cities also made the Top 10 list, including Fort Lauderdale (No. 5), Miami (No. 7), Fort Myers (No. 8) and Tampa (No. 10). Access to beaches is always appealing, but big cities continue to draw visitors as revealed by the exponential number of trips planned to major metro markets such as New York City, which is up by nearly 600 percent over last year and Los Angeles, up by almost 300 percent over last year. New York and Los Angeles knocked perennial favorites Denver and Honolulu off of this year’s Top 10 list.
According to the study by Allianz Partners, 81 percent of travelers going on spring break trips will be traveling within the continental U.S. this year, primarily on a shorter getaway of five days. In contrast, international travelers are booking longer trips of up to eight days to immerse themselves completely in the culture of their selected location.
While travel to international destinations is still facing entry restrictions, demand is on the rise as airlines restore routes and travelers seek out experiences following up to two years of virtual vacations. Mexico holds the reins on the top three spots for the fourth consecutive year, as it dominates with Cancun (No. 1), San Jose Del Cabo (No. 2) and Puerto Vallarta (No. 3) among the Top 10 international list. Growing consumer confidence and pent-up desire are spurring the global travel trend with island destinations from the Dominican Republic (No. 4) and across the Caribbean anticipating an influx of American visitors. Commemorative events surrounding the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee also helped return London (No. 10) to this year’s roster of international destinations.
