Ecuador President Daniel Noboa has appointed Mateo Julián Estrella Durán as the new minister of tourism. Estrella Durán brings extensive experience in tourism management, international relations and sustainable development. Prior to this, he was an advisor at the Ministry of Tourism, driving strategies that significantly boosted Ecuador's visibility in international markets. In addition, he has also led the Ecuadorian Association of Eco-Tourism and Adventure Travel, advocating eco-friendly practices and community partnerships for more inclusive economic growth.

“Ecuador offers a unique array of experiences across its 'Four Worlds' ranging from the lush biodiversity of the Amazon and the breathtaking landscapes of the Andes to the vibrant coastal culture, and the unique wildlife of the Galápagos,” stated Estrella Durán. "Together, with the vibrant Ecuadorian tourism industry and our travel partners throughout the world, we will work to showcase the best of Ecuador, fostering sustainable growth, enriching visitor experiences, and ensuring that our tourism sector continues to thrive."

In his new role, Estrella Duran aims to strengthen public-private partnerships, expand Ecuador’s presence in emerging tourism markets, and implement digital innovations to enhance tourist experiences. His experience in developing comprehensive tourism strategies and understanding Ecuador’s diverse regions will be key in promoting the country as a destination for various interests, from eco-tourism to cultural exploration.

In addition to his experience at the Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador, Estrella Duran served as general manager and president of Ecuaresorts S.A., where he oversaw the management of the IBIS hotel franchise in Ecuador, reinforcing his strong credentials in hospitality and tourism. In the academic world he has been a professor at the Faculty of Hospitality Sciences at the University of Cuenca for the past two decades and holds master’s degrees in Sustainable Strategic Management of Tourism Destinations from the University of Jaén, Spain, and Tourism Destination Management from the University of Catalonia
