The Florida Governor’s Conference on Tourism, which was supposed to take place next week in Boca Raton, has been cancelled due to Hurricane Dorian, Visit Florida announced.
“Palm Beach County is currently under a state of emergency at both the state and county level. The safety of our conference attendees and staff is paramount, and asking anyone to travel to South Florida over the weekend and early next week in the midst of a life-threatening hurricane would not be in the best interest of safety,” Dana D. Young, president and CEO of Visit Florida, said in a statement.
According to CBS News, Hurricane Dorian has strengthened to a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph. It will likely make landfall over Florida late Monday or early Tuesday, possibly as a Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds. The National Hurricane Center says “life-threatening storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds are likely along portions of the Florida east coast by early next week.”
The Governor’s Conference was scheduled for Tuesday through Friday, September 3 – 6. According to its website, “the annual Florida Governor’s Conference on Tourism is the premier educational conference for the Florida tourism industry. This event brings together tourism industry professionals, advertising agencies, travel experts and state leaders to explore the latest trends and opportunities for the industry.”
Note: Conference attendees will be able to cancel their rooms at the Boca Raton Resort and Club by visiting bocaresort.com or calling 888-543-1277.
