Number of Travelers and Trips Are Up This Fall: Stats

According to the latest research by rental management platform Vacasa, fall travel is on the rise this year, with 60 percent of Americans planning an autumn escape, up from 53 percent in 2021.

The fall travel trends survey also highlights that 71 percent of those planning trips will travel more frequently this fall than they did last, with quick weekend getaways being the most sought-after (74 percent). Nearly half of travelers are still pinning down their getaway plans, saying they are in the process of booking/planning (46 percent).

More than two in five fall travelers are heading to a beach destination (43 percent), followed by an urban/city destination (40 percent), while 35 percent are headed to a leisure destination, such as vineyards and small towns.

Half of Millennial Americans surveyed say they have used, or plan to use television shows and movies as their fall travel inspiration (49 percent). More than three-quarters of travelers are planning to stay domestic (80 percent), 54 percent of which say they plan to travel to a U.S. destination more than 500 miles from home—a jump from the 41 percent who planned similar travel last fall.

The survey also found that fall holidays are a popular time for travel: 78 percent of travelers will travel over a holiday; 51 percent for Thanksgiving, followed by 34 percent for Halloween. Looking ahead, 59 percent of Americans say they are planning winter holiday travel, with 43 percent traveling during Christmas.

Millennials are the most likely generation to travel over a fall holiday—90 percent are planning a holiday getaway. Interestingly, 28 percent of travelers indicated their intent to work remotely to allow for fall holiday travel this year.

With rising costs and inflation in mind, 86 percent of travelers indicated they have shifted their plans or planning behaviors to be more budget-conscious. Nearly three-fourths of travelers are driving to their fall destination(s) this season (74 percent), with 54 percent planning on flying. Further, 29 percent of those planning fall trips are on the lookout for special promotions, such as package deals and promotional codes. Travelers are additionally prioritizing places within their budget (45 percent),and experiences that will allow them to unplug and disconnect (37 percent).
